Then I thought of another idea. LTA is perfectly willing to sacrifice
Rochor Centre, an iconic HDB project, for the North-South Expressway,
and even Bukit Brown for a new road. But why can't they do more for our
public transport system? LTA have closed down sections of roads before
(Chinatown MRT, Bencoolen MRT), but they could quite possibly do more
(like tear down Sim Lim Tower to build a proper interchange for DTL with
itself?). And as for Bukit Brown, why couldn't they acquire the
property along Lornie Road so as to make more space for road expansion?
And
another related point, the new North-South Expressway is expected to be
ready before the completion of Thomson Line MRT. Why couldn't they time
the construction projects such that TSL can be completed before the
NSE? If drivers experiencing congestion on the CTE/SLE could try out
TSL, then it might convert them to public transport users. But if the
NSE is completed first, these drivers would simply use the NSE, which
would make it much harder to convert them to public transport users,
since they would have been quite comfortable with driving on the NSE and
see no reason to use public transport ...
